Your application received enough support from the Admission Committee to be approved for admission. However, Rice's small size prevents us from admitting all such students. As an alternate to the class, you have the opportunity to accept a place on the waitlist. We consider students on the waitlist as positions in the class become available.
We cannot determine this yet because not all of the students offered this opportunity will accept a place on the waitlist.
In recent years, we have offered admission to as many as 150 students on the waitlist and as few as zero.
No. All students who accept their place on the waitlist will be reviewed for all available spaces.
Yes. All schools expect admitted students to commit to one (and only one) school by May 1, 2020. However, students may remain on any school’s waitlist throughout the summer. The only rule is that you must cancel your enrollment from a school once you accept another school’s offer of admission.
We will contact you by phone and email. For this reason it is important that you notify us of any changes to your contact information. In particular, be sure we have a correct phone number where you can be reached throughout the months of May, June and July.
Yes. Admission is need-blind for all U.S. citizens, permanent residents, DACA students and undocumented students who have been in the U.S. for an extended period of time.
We guarantee need-based financial aid for all admitted students who qualify. If your financial aid application is complete, we will prepare an aid package at the time of acceptance. Merit-based scholarships are not available to students accepted from the waitlist.
Historically, we are usually able to accomodate all freshmen admitted from the waitlist who desire on-campus housing. In the extremely unlikely event that you are admitted but housing is not available, we will notify you at the time you receive your offer of admission.
You should update your file in writing to inform us of your continued interest in Rice as well as any notable awards or achievements since your original application. Additions to the file should be directly from the student. Please do not send additional letters of recommendation from school officials, Rice alumni or others. Upload any updates via your Rice Admission Student Portal.
There is no need to call the Office of Admission, as this will not improve your chances of being admitted. Our goal is to send an update by June 1 to all students who accept a place on our waitlist. We anticipate all waitlist decisions will be completed by July 1.
