Discovering Houston Beyond the “Rice Bubble”

#Houston

When I first came to Rice, I heard about the “Rice Bubble,” that comfortable feeling of wanting to stay on campus where everything is within walking distance. But as I got settled in, I couldn’t ignore the fact that an entire city was waiting just outside the hedges — a city that’s been home for my entire life. From the vibrant art and food scenes to the incredible cultural celebrations, I’ve always known that Houston has much to offer! Even though I’ve lived here for years, I was excited to explore my hometown from a fresh perspective as a college student.

A cool place that I discovered recently is the Museum of Illusions. Full of unique exhibits that challenge your perception of reality (from rooms where you appear to defy gravity to optical illusions that make you second-guess what you’re seeing), this fun and interactive space is perfect for a weekend outing with friends. After my visit, I left with plenty of photos and even more questions about how the brain works.

I also love spending time at The Post Houston, an old post office that was transformed into a vibrant hub for food, art and entertainment in Downtown Houston. Whether I’m trying out a new dish from one of the many food vendors or lounging in the rooftop garden with a view of the skyline, it’s become one of my go-to spots in the city.

What really makes Houston stand out for me, though, are its cultural events. The city celebrates diversity year-round, and I’ve experienced so much just by stepping foot outside the hedges. In January, I went downtown to the MLK Day parade, where I saw colorful floats, music, and spoken word performances that really brought the streets to life. It was inspiring to see so many people coming together to honor Dr. King’s legacy while reflecting on the ongoing fight for justice.

In June, the city hosts a series of Juneteenth events. One of my favorite events to attend is the performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Sitting under the stars and watching a powerful celebration of freedom through music and dance is always an unforgettable experience. Houston does such a great job of honoring its history and creating spaces where everyone feels welcome to celebrate and learn.

Of course, you can’t miss the annual Zoo Lights event that’s held each holiday season. Walking through the Houston Zoo surrounded by glowing displays and twinkling tunnels is magical, even if it’s still 70 degrees outside! I’ve learned that Houston doesn’t let the weather stop it from getting into the holiday spirit, and that kind of energy is contagious.

Every outing that I have experienced while at Rice has been a reminder of how much Houston has to offer. From live performances at Discovery Green to quiet moments at Buffalo Bayou Park, there’s always something new to see or do. Whether I’m trying an unfamiliar dish, soaking in a cultural event or enjoying the view of the skyline, I always find something that makes me feel more connected to this incredible place.
