ED I vs. ED II: Decoding Rice’s Early Decision Application Options

Since Fall 2025, Rice University has offered two distinct Early Decision plans for prospective students. Both the ED I and ED II plans are designed specifically for applicants whose top choice school is Rice, and who are fully committed to attending if accepted.

Under these plans, students may only choose a single institution to apply to through ED I. However, ED II offers a valuable, additional opportunity to apply with that same binding commitment if a student has not already been accepted elsewhere during the earlier cycle.

Choosing to apply Early Decision to a university requires careful consideration. It should not only take into account a student’s sincere excitement for the school, but also the financial fit for their family. To help applicants make this commitment confidently, Rice offers tools like the Net Price Calculator alongside 1:1 appointments to support families throughout the decision-making process.

Understanding the Early Decision Timelines

The primary difference between Rice’s ED I and ED II plans lies in their timelines:

  • Early Decision I (ED I): Applying ED I requires students to submit their application to Rice by November 1, with admission decisions released by mid-December.
  • Early Decision II (ED II): Applying ED II gives students until January 4 to submit their materials, with decisions released by early February.

The two months of additional preparation time built into the ED II timeline can greatly benefit students who want to retake a standardized test or simply want more time to work on their application. Ultimately, having both options provides excellent additional opportunities to better support prospective students in their application journeys.

Articulating Your Understanding and Interest in Rice University

Finally, Rice considers an applicant’s understanding and interest in the Rice undergraduate experience during the admission evaluation process. Because of this, it is crucial that applicants articulate their understanding and specific interest(s) in the Rice Supplement and optional interview, regardless of which early plan they choose to apply through.
