Rice Admission Policy Updates

#applying

Rice recently announced two updates to our application process to be implemented starting with the Fall 2024-25 admission cycle. First, we introduced an Early Decision II (ED II) plan. We heard what counselors and students were saying about wanting additional flexibility in the application process, and ED II seemed like a good option to add based on this feedback. This will give students who have only recently decided on Rice as their top choice school the chance to express their preference to be a Rice Owl. It will also provide prospects with some extra time to polish up their applications since they’ll now be able to submit later in the cycle.

The second update modifies the test score policy for admissions applications. Starting with the Fall 2024-25 admission cycle, we recommend, but do not require, that students submit SAT or ACT test scores as part of the application process. Although we now recommend that students submit test scores, we will continue to practice holistic review and will not make decisions based on any one specific academic indicator. Test scores are one factor out of many that we consider, and students who are unable to submit test scores or prefer not to submit test scores will still receive full consideration in the admission selection process. As always, we are looking at your test scores (and other application components) within the context of your individual environment and experiences.

Since Rice does not have cut-offs or minimum testing requirements, the Class Profile data can be helpful to see the ranges in which admitted students have previously tested. This may help you determine whether you should submit your test scores. We also encourage you to take a look at our Application Advice Series for more guidance as you navigate the application process.

Remember that the deadline for Early Decision I is November 1, and the Early Decision II and Regular Decision deadline is January 4. Learn more about the updated application processes by visiting the Office of Admission website
