¡Ritmo!, a celebration of resilience and passion, offers a glimpse into the richness of Latine culture. This year’s theme, Arte y Alma (Art and Soul), highlighted the deep connection between creativity and cultural identity and created a space where Latine heritage was seen, heard and felt. The energy in the room during the showcase was absolutely electric as attendees joined in the music and danced, transforming the event into a true fiesta!
One of the night’s most memorable moments came during the mariachi performance. The passion and spirit of mariachi filled the Grand Hall as the audience clapped, sang along and cheered for more. Mariachi is more than just music; it’s a tradition that tells stories of love, struggle and celebration. And for me, there is no better way to share my heritage than being on stage and playing the songs that resonate with so many.
Beyond mariachi, ¡Ritmo! also featured a dynamic lineup of performances that brought Latine culture to life. Dance groups energized the crowd with traditional and contemporary routines, while spoken word artists shared powerful personal stories. The fashion showcase displayed beautiful Latine attire, and musicians performed songs that spanned multiple genres and regions. Every act contributed to this immersive cultural experience, proving that art, in all forms, is deeply tied to identity.
This year, the showcase also featured a video spotlighting Hispanic and Latine faculty members and staff at Rice (including Housing and Dining workers). Their contributions often go unrecognized, but on this night, their stories were at the heart of the celebration. The audience erupted in applause for the vital role that these individuals play in the Rice community. It was an emotional and meaningful moment that really reinforced the importance of visibility and appreciation.
As ¡Ritmo! continues to grow each year, it continues to be an inclusive space for cultural expression. For students looking for a place where heritage is embraced and celebrated, Rice is a community where culture thrives!
