If you’re thinking about transferring schools, you may be wondering where to begin. As a former transfer student and Rice alumna, I know that this process might feel like you’re starting over, but it is also an opportunity to find a better-fit environment. Whether you’re coming from a community college, another four-year institution, or simply exploring a new academic path, here are some insights to help you through your second round of applications.
Before jumping straight into an application, ask yourself why you want to transfer. Are you looking for a better campus experience, a specific program or professor, or do you want to transition from a two-year college to a four-year university? Understanding these motivating factors will help you apply with purpose to find a school that truly fits.
When narrowing down your choices, you should look into whether or not previously completed courses will transfer and consider other factors, such as cost and available scholarships/financial aid. Tools like EdVisorly and Niche can help. You should also reach out to an academic advisor at your current school and an admission officer at the school you’re considering to clarify application requirements.
As you begin working on your transfer application, you may want to keep the following tips in mind:
- Does your application tell us how you’ve made the most of your current academic environment? Have you challenged yourself and pursued academic rigor? Beyond academics, don’t forget to share details about any extracurricular activities you're involved in, such as research, internships, part-time or full-time work, clubs, volunteering or even family responsibilities. These experiences will help us understand how you manage your time and what you can contribute to the Rice community.
- A key strength of many transfer students is the unique path they've taken in their academic journey. Carefully consider how you can present your own unconventional path as a strength. The Rice Supplement plays a key role in helping us get to know you, and you should use this section to reflect on WHY you want to transfer to Rice and explain how this change will help your academic, social or career goals. Be authentic so we can get to know the real you!
At Rice, we are committed to welcoming, supporting and empowering all students — and this is reflected in our culture of care. Transfer students have access to Rice’s campus resources after admission, which include but are not limited to: the Wellbeing and Counseling Center, the Office of Study Abroad, the Office of Academic Advising and the Center for Career Development.
Visit our Transfer applicant page for key deadlines and detailed application requirements. We look forward to reviewing your submission!
